For 16 years now, La Fabrique Cinéma has been a fertile garden. Among its budding shoots this year the Institut français is cultivating diversity of vision, tone and storytelling, and is promoting many different ways of making cinema. By selecting first or second feature film projects by filmmakers and producers from the global south and emerging countries, La Fabrique Cinéma is an incubator for young talent that is vital to the balance of the global film ecosystem and to discovering artists who might someday feature in the Official Selection of the Festival de Cannes. Only time will tell, and I sincerely hope they will!

Through nine fiction films and one documentary, the projects resulting from this year's La Fabrique show us different ways of inhabiting the world. Between economic, political and material reality and beliefs, legends and spirituality, each of these feature-length films questions the construction of identity, in its particularities as much as its universality. We come across stories of emigration and integration, characters in search of their origins, but also stories that grapple with fantasy, with mythology as a means of self-discovery.

It is a great pleasure to know that they are accompanied in this rich experience by Ivorian filmmaker Philippe Lacôte, who made a name for himself in the 2014 Un Certain Regard selection with his debut feature Run, and who himself took part in La Fabrique in 2018 with La Nuit des Rois. In this film, imbued with magical realism, a young prisoner in Abidjan's notorious Maca prison is forced to tell a story to entertain a kingpin and survive. This fable reminds us of the supernatural power of storytelling and expression as an essential freedom for emancipation.
We are all striving for this, with joy, conviction and pride.
